Creativity and New Media

For my new media blog about creativity I decided to show/post a few of my favorite youtube most creative videos. In new media there are tons of opportunity for new business and current businesses to expand and reach a larger crowd; especially for marketing purposes. For example- the new craze of “Flash Mobs”. Look at the links below:

These are just  a couple ways that buzz can be brought to a new or old company very fast as well as just conversation about how to get more people to come in, whether they buy items or not is not the question but we know they are there.

This would have to be my favorite… Target and Beyonce just got a lot of free marketing.

Creativity

Many different things that we all will have ideas about can define creativity, most of us think of artist, and imaginations when we think of this. Creativity has much different impact on social media, new media, and new business.

We might not want to remember/ consider this but all businesses are all about creativity, you find a need of the public and then you use it to make a solution to the need. All these social networking sites were a “idea of creativitiy” that was thought of by the creator- the internet was “blowing up” and the creators of facebook, twitter, myspace, instagram, etc thought of a way to keep the public informed about what we were doing, a way to communicate, and converse among one another.

In the article “Twitter Serves up ideas from its followers” by Claire Cain Miller published in 2009 by the NY times it discusses how twitter has being getting information from its users improve. Its like how smart is that? Using your consumers to get feedback on how to improve… Hmm or “DUH”. This how most business gets information about how to improve, comment cards at restaurants and hotels? It’s only the smart companies that are smart enough to actually listen to its consumers.

In the article “1+1+1=1” by Sasha Frere-Jones published by The New Yorker in 2005 is an extreme example of creativity. I think artist, rappers, singers, producers, etc take a lot of creativity to do their jobs successfully. Some people do have that nitch but others do. But as we all know the advances in technology continues to make this easier.

Virtual Worlds

I think virtual worlds can have many different uses, both with pros and cons that can affect the greater public.

In the article “In room 100, it’s Sid and Nancy all over again” from the NY times by Saki Knafo which was published in 2009, this virtual world was created to “recreate” something which is no more (Hotel Chelsea). This is just one way to use this positively to help better inform the public and other people who are interested and what to experience place that no longer exist.

In the article “Toy with a Second Life” from the Bloomberg magazine published in 2007, the topic of discussion is the virtual world created for toys. Is this something we have heard of before? Yesssss, do you remember back in the 90’s when they had “giga pets”? Well I do and it looks like that trend is starting all over again except this time its more for users to do with it. I personally see this as another way to make money for the toy companies’ but who am I to say? I can’t really establish if this is a negative or positive yet. But I do remember me worrying about making sure my “giga pet” was bathed and feed before I went to sleep every night, and it did take a good portion of my time to ensure I was walking it throughout the day.

There can be many pros and cons to a virtual world. The biggest determining factor would be; the reason it was created, and who are the user. Virtual worlds are just that “virtual” meaning not real, not actual, not life. For example the article about the virtual toy world could- pro (bring more computer literate up coming children to society) or con (be swarmed by pedophiles looking for children where they can hide their identity). When everything it is always a pro and con.

Virtual worlds most definitely foster creativity for whoever is using it. Its using your imagination to virtually create, experience, and use these site and places for our benefits. I can say when I was a younger I was just getting into computers and the game “the sims” came out and it was something that sparked my interest in computers and money management. This focused me to be a computer science major in vocational high school. The creativity given to the users of virtual worlds are endless and I think that is where creativity lives- without boundaries.

The future of virtual worlds will in my opinion not be changed greatly other than the “graphics” of it. Of course over time computer programmers will find a way to better develop these worlds to make them more visually attractive for the users and public. But I do think that they will be used more for companies that are trying to improve and it will illustrate a greater awareness to the public on what it is and what it takes to get what we all expect out of business and services.

Social Networking Sites

Social networking sites have been around for some time now. I can remember when I was in grammar school there was a site called “black planet”, and it was a craze that everyone was talking about. When I now see; my space, facebook, twitter, instgram its all over again. When these site-started it was like everyone was wanted to join and the thought of privacy, stalking was not a concern. Now in days, this is the biggest issues that one is faced with when considering using social networking sites. But as we all know although they all are geared towards different things.

My Space

This site came very suddenly. When I was in High School this site was on everyone’s top things to do. In comparison to the sites that we currently have for social networking it was not my favorite. It was not interactive enough for fellow users to communicate with each other; other than messaging. That was very similar to email.

Facebook

This I would have to say this is the most used social networking sites’. It has been the most developed by far compared to all the rest. The start of it was a huge success and the “buzz” that was brought from it has been amazing. I’m surprised its not a word in the dictionary yet. I think this is one of my most favorite social networking sites. It is very beneficial for the use if used correctly. The programs that are connected with its use are endless, from iphones being about to update information from FB and automatically change pictures, email address, phone numbers, name etc. has been a great expansion and use for the consumer.

Twitter

I think twitter is very good for promotions and that’s about it. I don’t really use it that much other than when I update my FB statuses it also goes to twitter. For marketing people this site is by far the best at it and I think that’s why I don’t like it as much as FB.

Instagram

This “picture posting” site is also something I use frequently. I don’t know if it is actually a site as an App for iphone and android users. Instagram I think is one of the best “get to the point” social networking sites. Its just pictures and you know what they say, “ a picture is worth 1,000 words”. Instagram covers the picture sharing of FB and the promotion and marketing of twitter, and now in days its like they are all connected to each other so it pretty user friendly.
